Lady Pirates fall to Louisiana-Lafayette, 57-44

HAMPTON, Va. - The Hampton University Lady Pirates shot just 15% from the field, including 18% from three-point range, and consequently fell to the Ragin’ Cajuns of Louisiana-Lafayette, 57-44, tonight at the Hampton University Convocation Center.

UL jumped out to a 23-13 lead at the break with Onna Charles leading the way with seven points on 2-of-6 shooting from the field as she headed a UL offense that shot only 30 percent (8-27) in the first half.. On the flip side, Hampton managed just four field goals the entire first half, going 4-of-34 (12%) from the floor and turning the ball over 11 times.

The second half was much of the same for both teams as the Ragin’ Cajuns outscored the Lady Pirates 34-31 to provide the final 57-44 margin. UL got a huge spark from its reserves that outscored Hampton’s bench by a marginal 16-14, and the Ragin’ Cajuns also controlled the paint where they scored 26 of their 57 points. The Pirates managed only 10 points in the paint and committed 28 turnovers to UL’s 20. Nevertheless, the Pirates continue to control the boards against opponents as they out rebounded the Ragin’ Cajuns 56-52.

Charles and Yolanda Jones were the two top scorers for Louisiana-Lafayette with 10 and 11 respectively with Jones grabbing a game-high 12 rebounds for the double-double. The Lady Pirates were led by freshman standout Whitney Hill (Hampton, Va. /Phoebus HS) with 10 points as she connected 2-4 from three-point range. Sophomore forward Ashlee Finley (Harrisburg, Pa. /Harrisburg HS) chipped in with nine rebounds and senior center Jade Jones (St. Croix, V.I./Good Hope) added seven boards.

The Lady Pirates return to the court for action on Tuesday, Nov. 28 to host Grambling at 6 p.m.
